10 Bible Scriptures Every Christian Should Memorise

A quick trip down memory lane, and you'd remember those days when "father Abraham" was the go-to song in Sunday school, or the days when sword drills were the coolest game ever, and remembering your memory verse was a big-time accomplishment.

Head up, head down, turn around? Of course, you remember. Those were the good old days.
While adulthood with its many troubles may have changed our stance on many things, studying, understanding and memorising the word of God is not something to be left behind in childhood. Rather, it should be a permanent fixture at every stage of our lives.

Psalm 119:11 tells us, "Thy word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee". The truth is, many people read the Bible but do not study it, and if we do not study, how then can we memorise, and have it hidden in our hearts? Memorising the word of God may not be a requirement to get to heaven, but it does make the journey here a whole lot easier. Not only does memorising God's word keep us from sin, but it also fills our hearts with peace, and is an ever-present reminder of God's promises to us.

Now, no one scripture is more important than the other, but you do need to start your scripture memory journey from somewhere, and I do believe these 10 powerful scriptures should start you off just fine.

Below are 10 Bible scriptures every Christian should memorise:

1. Jeremiah 29:11(KJV) - "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." There are so many times in the Christian journey that you'd question God. Where is His face? What is He up to? This is God's promise to you, and a daily confession would go a long way to ease your worries. I particularly love the message translation. It says, "I know what I'm doing. I have it all planned out - plans to take care of you, not abandon you, plans to give you the future you hope for.", and what better assurance than this? He knows what he's doing.

2. 1 Corinthians 10:23 (KJV) - "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not." For a clearer picture, let's look at the NIV translation. "Everything is permissible - but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible - but not everything is constructive. "The bible let's us know here that, our standard for doing things is not limited to what is legal or not. As a matter of fact, as Christians, some legal things are very much "illegal" for us. We should always ask ourselves before taking any decision - Is it beneficial? Is it constructive? Does it build up spiritually or otherwise? And, how does it affect others?

3. Galatians 6:17 (KJV) - "From henceforth let no man trouble me: for I bear in my body the marks of the Lord Jesus." This particular scripture can mean different things to different people, depending on the Holy Spirit's interpretation to you. One thing is certain though, in as much as we are of Christ and are called by his name, no one, no circumstance is permitted to trouble us.

4. James 4:17 (KJV) - "Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin." If everyone had this scripture hid in their hearts, the world would be a much better place. Asides from religion now, everyone is born with an inbuilt sense of morality, the ability to tell wrong from right. The Bible let's us know here that, as long as you're aware of the right thing to do in a situation, and you deliberate decide not to do it, you have sinned. This is a wake-up call to everyone.

5. Romans 8: 28 (KJV) - "And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose." This should not only be memorised, but should be a daily confession. No matter what the times are saying, all things work together for good to them that love God. Remember, He knows what He's doing.

6. 2 Timothy 2: 19 (KJV) - "Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity." God's standards are clearly cut out for us. He demands absolute purity, and as we continue to remind ourselves of this scripture, we should do well to ask Him for the enabling grace.

7. Numbers 23: 19 (KJV) - "God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good?" This should encourage us in our walk with God. God is subject to no one, neither are there any consequences for His actions, so He has no reason whatsoever to lie to us. If He has said it, as long as we're still alive, and on His side, He will certainly do it.

8. Luke 6: 38 (KJV) - "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again." The universe runs on certain principles and laws, one of which is giving. As Christians, as humans even, God requires us to give to others, not sparingly or grudgingly now, remember God loves a cheerful giver, and most certainly not because we want something in return. But when we give, we give for God, and now he assures us that we also will be given and blessed in return.

9. Psalm 107: 20 (KJV) - " He sent his word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions." If we had not been convinced of the importance of bidding God's word in our hearts, here is one written plainly. God's word is powerful and potent enough to heal us from whatever disease, incurable or otherwise, and to also deliver us from every destruction. After all, the word is Jesus himself.

10. Jeremiah 32: 27 (KJV) - "Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there anything too hard for me?" God lets us know here again that He has everything covered and He's in control. No request we have is too big for God to answer. No situation is written off except He says so. He is the God of all flesh, and nothing is too difficult for Him.

So there you go, 10 Bible scriptures every Christian should memorise. Read them, confess them, but most importantly, believe them, and you'd definitely see a positive difference.
Shalom!
