Discovering your life purpose as a Christian

One of the most asked questions from Christians around the world is the question of how to discover life’s purpose. Everyone wants to know what his or her life’s purpose is because that’s the only way to be fulfilled.

Let’s talk about Jesus and Christmas, to begin with. So, we all get excited about Christmas and we look forward to celebrating the saviour of the world. Okay, slow down for a moment to think about that. What made his birth to remarkable? Why is Christmas so important?

Here’s the thing; Christ’s birth is so important because, at the end of his years on earth, he fulfilled the purpose of why he was born, and that purpose brought life to humanity.

So, now we celebrate the one who brought us life and righteousness with God, and we look up to him as our greatest role model to follow in his steps, which in this case, is discovering our life’s purpose and achieving it.

So, let’s go back to the question every Christian ask themselves; what’s my purpose in life?

Answer: Our purpose here on earth as Christians is to know God and make Him known.

Contrary to what a majority of us think, no one’s purpose is unique to them, but our assignments are. I’ll explain that in a bit.

We all have a uniform purpose, and that is to know God and to make Him known to all.

“I gave up all that inferior stuff so I could know Christ personally, experience his resurrection power, be a partner in his suffering, and go all the way with him to death itself.” Philippians 3:10 (Message Translation)

Again, there’s only one thing we were made to do here on earth. Take a clue from Christ; He came to make God known to us, open up a way to him for all of us who are willing to accept his love, and finally gave us the mandate to make him known all over the world.

“Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the message of God’s good news to one and all.” Mark 16:15 (Message translation)

Here’s the thing though. Yes, we all have a unique purpose as Christians, but we have different assignments, and that’s where our careers, businesses, and the likes come to play.

We don’t all have the same interest, gifts, passion or skilled abilities, which is why we can’t all do the same thing. Plus, we need our diversities and differences to build a thriving community.

For instance, say you know how to write so well, someone else, how to sing, another person, how to market, and another how to tell stories, etc. To build a thriving community or organization, we all need each other’s ability and area of specialization. That’s why we have different assignments.

So, what’s the use of your assignment?

Your assignment is to create influence for you to get the message of God to as many people as possible,

Remember Jesus’ words? Go to the world; not go to your town, your city or your local community. He says you should go to the world, so if you’re going to achieve that, you need to be highly influential in your field or industry because you need a lot of resources to get the word to so many people. When you have gained the influence, you can leverage it to tell the gospel of Christ and the message of salvation to everyone.

Do you know the implication of this? It means that for you to become influential, you need to take your assignment seriously, just as Jesus did.

Whether you are a lawyer, writer, software developer, preacher, marketer, graphic designer, and all of that, learning to become the best at what you do is the only way to become valuable and influential so that you can use your platform to make God known to all.

“Whatever your hands find to do, do it with your might…..” Ecclesiastes 9:10 (NKJV)

In other words, a blogger has the same purpose as a preacher, but different assignments (different means to communicate or effect this purpose). Does that make sense now?

So, if you really want to live a fulfilled life as a Christian, then you’d do these to two things;

Know Christ and make Him known to all
Build a platform that gives you the leverage to reach as many people as possible with the gospel.
