South African authorities detained Anabela Rungo, the mother of renowned beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina (Miss Universe Africa and Miss Universe Oceania 2024), amid allegations of fraudulent documentation and improper residency practices.

Authorities from the Department of Home Affairs, in collaboration with the South African Police Service (SAPS), executed the operation at a Cape Town property. Ms. Rungo’s South African documentation was withdrawn in September 2024 after investigators discovered it had been fraudulently obtained. Despite her “undesirable” status, records indicate that Ms. Rungo attempted to bypass legal restrictions by using her Mozambican passport.

During the operation, investigators discovered that an under-aged child was residing with Ms. Rungo. This child is reportedly Chidimma Adetshina's child, who is reportedly divorced.

SA Home Affairs disclosed that it is coordinating with SAPS and the Department of Social Development to safeguard the interests of Chidimma Adetshina's child. The SAPS Child Protection Unit has been activated to assess and secure the wellbeing of the minor, while further investigations into Ms. Rungo’s conduct remain ongoing.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Implications

While Ms. Rungo is processed for her illegal residency and fraudulent documentation, further investigations continue into additional potential misrepresentations. Authorities have indicated that no interviews will be conducted at this stage and that additional updates will be released as the investigation progresses. The outcomes of this case may have broad implications for document fraud enforcement and child welfare procedures in South Africa.
