The Nigerian entertainment industry has been left in shock with the tragic news of the passing of veteran Nollywood actor, Columbus Irisoanga, famously known for his iconic role as “Igbudu” in the 2001 hit movie Isakaba. His death was confirmed by fellow Nollywood actress and politician, Hilda Dokubo, who shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram on Thursday.
Hilda Dokubo, deeply affected by the loss, expressed her sorrow in a post that highlighted the weight of the loss for both the University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) and the Nollywood industry as a whole.
She wrote, “There can’t be a shortage of Angels in heaven that the few here are called home like this na! This one is heavy on Uniport, Rivers State, Nollywood.”
Her message reflects the deep void left by Irisoanga's departure, both in the academic world and the entertainment industry.

Dr. Columbus Irisoanga was not just an actor, but also a respected academic. He served as a senior lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, where he dedicated much of his life to teaching and mentoring students. Irisoanga was highly accomplished, earning his bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees from the institution. His contributions to the university and his students’ growth in the arts were invaluable.
Born and raised in Okrika, Rivers State, Irisoanga was a proud indigene of the state, always carrying the culture of his roots with him. His legacy extends beyond acting and academia; he was a beloved husband and father, leaving behind a family that he held dear.
Known for his memorable portrayal of Igbudu, the powerful chief priest in Isakaba, Irisoanga’s work continues to resonate with Nollywood fans, leaving a significant mark on the industry. His passing leaves a huge gap that will be hard to fill, as he was not only an exceptional actor but a symbol of dedication to both his craft and his community.
This loss is particularly heavy for the University of Port Harcourt and Nollywood, as Irisoanga’s influence was far-reaching. His contributions to the growth of theatre arts in Nigeria cannot be overstated. His legacy will surely be felt for many years to come.
