Justice Nwosu-Iheme of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer Osinachi, to death by hanging. The judgment was delivered on Monday, April 28, 2025.

Peter Nwachukwu was found guilty of killing his wife, Osinachi, whose death on April 8, 2022, shocked many Nigerians. After hearing all the evidence, the judge ruled that the prosecution proved beyond doubt that he caused her death.

Nwachukwu was first invited to court on June 3, 2022, by the Federal Government through the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. He faced a 23-count charge. The charges included killing his wife, beating and threatening her, being cruel to their children, and spousal abuse.

During the trial, the government called a number of witnesses to speak, including two of Osinachi’s children who shared painful details of what happened in their home. The prosecution also tendered 25 documents to back up their case.

Nwachukwu tried to defend himself by speaking in court, calling his witnesses, and submitting documents to back up his defence.

Before the judgment, Nwachukwu’s lawyer, Reginald Nwali, had pleaded with the court to pardon Nwachukwu with a lesser sentence. But the government’s lawyer, Mrs. Aderonke Imala, insisted that the court should uphold the law and serve justice.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging for killing his wife (Count 1). She also gave him additional punishments:

  • Two years in prison each for Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18

  • Six months in prison for Count 10

  • Three years in prison for Count 11

  • Fines of N500,000 and N200,000 for Counts 6 and 7 respectively

This ruling brings an end to a case that has drawn huge public attention, especially from fans of Osinachi who had been demanding justice for her.
