In regard to the nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024, against bad governance, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has announced the establishment of pro bono legal support services for protesters. This initiative is aimed at protecting citizens' constitutional rights to peaceful assembly amid reports of both peaceful demonstrations and instances of violence that have marred some protests.

NBA President, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, OON, SAN, has directed the Chairmen/Chairpersons of the NBA’s 130 branches to mobilize their Human Rights Committees to address any observed or reported violations of fundamental rights committed by law enforcement or protest participants. In a bid to enhance this monitoring effort, the NBA has also instructed the formation of Situation Monitoring Committees (SMCs) to oversee and report on the interactions between law enforcement and protesters.

To ensure the effective coordination of this initiative, the NBA has set up Legal Support Services Teams across the country. These teams, according to a statement released by the NBA through its National Publicity Secretary (Akorede Habeeb Lawal) , will be led by prominent members including Mrs. Linda Rose Bala, the NBA's 1st Vice President, Sir Steve Adehi, SAN, the Chairman of NBA-SPIDEL, and Mr. Chinonye Obiagwu, SAN, Chairman of the NBA Human Rights Institute.

As the protests evolve, the NBA aims to provide immediate legal assistance to those who encounter legal issues during these demonstrations. An online Monitoring Form has been made available for SMC members and other NBA participants to document any incidents of rights violations and misconduct.

The NBA encourages all citizens, especially its members participating in the protests, to exercise their rights peacefully and within the bounds of the law. In parallel, the association has reached out to the Inspector General of Police for collaborative efforts to ensure that law enforcement acts professionally and safeguards human rights during this critical time.

As the #endbadgovernance movement continues to gain traction, the NBA remains committed to ensuring the safety and rights of Nigerians as they demand accountability and reform from their government. The association’s proactive measures highlight its dedication to legal protection and the preservation of civil liberties during this pivotal period of civic engagement.
