Nigerian street-hop sensation Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, is reportedly on the run after the Ogun State Government arraigned nine of his associates for allegedly assaulting government officials. The controversy stems from an altercation at his establishment, Odogwu Bar, which was sealed by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development over allegations of illegal development without proper permits.
On Thursday, nine individuals associated with the singer appeared before a Magistrates’ Court in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The accused include Oluwaseun Ayenuwa (19), Precious Ohiegebo (19), Oluwapelumi Adeosun (20), Gospel Kanu (20), Nurudeen Warris (21), Adetola Alashe (25), Fatimo Muhammed (26), Ifeoluwa Babatunde (27), and Samuel Adeleke (28).
They faced a five-count charge including armed violence, obstruction of duty, assault, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and intent to kill.
Police Prosecutor Sunday Ekong revealed that the incident happened on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. in the Oke-Osa, Tigbo Ilu area of Sango-Ota. He stated:
“The defendants and Portable, who is at large, unlawfully assaulted, restricted, and obstructed town planning officials—Abidemi Onabanjo, Ramon Lateef, and Akinpelumi Oyero—while they were performing their lawful duties at the Odogwu Bar.”
Ekong further alleged that the defendants were armed with cutlasses and guns, posing a serious threat to public safety. Their actions, he noted, violated Sections 516, 356(3), 80, 249(d), and 320 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.
During the hearing, the defendants pleaded not guilty to all charges. Magistrate O.M. Somefun granted them bail, setting the sum at N5 million each, with sureties who must be licensed bond agents registered with the state government. The case has been adjourned until March 17 for further hearing.
Following the government’s action, Portable took to social media to express his frustration, claiming that over 20 people were arrested during the raid, including artists, customers, and those who sought his assistance. He alleged that officials confiscated properties during the operation, questioning why his establishment was targeted.
“I was using the building for events and shows, not just for selling drinks,” the singer stated.
Portable, known for his controversial persona, has had previous run-ins with the law. This latest case raises questions about his legal standing and the consequences of his defiance against authorities, with the court set to resume hearing on March 17, all eyes are on Portable.
