Winfred Yavi Wins Olympic Gold for Bahrain in Women's 3000m Steeplechase and Sets New Olympic Record

In a stunning performance, 24-year-old Winfred Yavi secured her place in history by winning Bahrain's third-ever Olympic gold medal in the women's 3000m steeplechase, while simultaneously setting a new Olympic record. Competing at the Paris 2024 Olympics, Yavi clocked an impressive time of 8:52.76, breaking the previous record of 8:58.81 set by Gulnara Galkina in 2008.

Born on December 31, 1999, in Kenya, Yavi has quickly risen to the top of the athletics world. In 2023, she made headlines by becoming the first athlete from Bahrain to win a steeplechase medal at the World Championships, taking home the gold in Budapest, Hungary.

Yavi's remarkable year continued as she achieved a personal best of 8:50.66 at the 2023 Diamond League final held in Eugene, Oregon, USA, propelling her into the second spot on the all-time 3000m steeplechase list, just behind Kenya's Beatrice Chepkoech.

Her success extends beyond the steeplechase; Yavi is also a three-time Asian Games gold medallist. She excelled in the steeplechase at the 2018 Asian Games and showcased her versatility by winning both the steeplechase and 1500m events at the 2022 Asian Games, which were held in 2023.

With her Olympic victory and record-breaking performance, Winfred Yavi has not only made her mark on the international stage but has also become an inspiration for athletes in Bahrain and beyond.
