Who is Anthony Joshua?
Professional Nigerian British boxer, Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, popularly known as Anthony Joshua or "AJ", is a two-time heavyweight champion who has dominated the world of boxing in recent times.
Anthony Joshua was born on the 15th of October 1989 in Watford, Hertfordshire England to Nigerian parents. Joshua started boxing in 2007 when he was only 18 years old after being encouraged by his cousin who is also a boxer. He made his professional debut in 2013, under the promotional banner of Matchroom Sport, at the 02 arena in London on the 5th of October.
Ever since the start of his career, he has been a prodigy in the world of boxing. Joshua displayed great prowess in several competitions. He won his first championship in 2010 and also won a gold medal in London 2012 Olympics. Anthony Joshua stands out among his peers in the boxing world and has some of the most anticipated matches in recent times. He shook the world by defeating veteran fighter, Wladimir Klitschko, in a spectacular performance in 2017. He later defeated tough opponent, Alexander Povetkin, in another spectacular performance the following year (2018).
Other than being a great boxer, Joshua is also an erudite athlete. Though a formidable opponent, he rarely engages in 'thrash talk'.
Joshua currently held the WBA (Super) IBF, WBO, and IBO titles from 2016 - 2019. He also held the regional level Commonwealth title between 2014 and 2016. Although our champion is a natural-born fighter, he has also had his fair share of losses.
Anthony Joshua lost to Andy Ruiz in New York in 2019. His loss to Ruiz who was an underdog at the time was one of the greatest boxing upsets in history. With the announcement of a rematch six months later, the anticipation of fans greatly increased and Anthony Joshua did not disappoint his fans. He defeated Andy Ruiz by a unanimous decision in Saudi Arabia and claimed his belts back. Joshua currently holds the WBA (Super) IBF, WBO, and IBO titles.
Who is Joshua's next opponent in 2020
Since Joshua's glorious come back against Andy Ruiz, our champion has been confronted with more than one challenger. But it was later confirmed that his next opponent will be Kubrat Pulev.
Fans have been greatly agitated ever since the announcement of his next match with Bulgarian boxer, Kubrat Pulev. Between 2012 and 2016, the Bulgarian boxer nicknamed "The Cobra", has held the European heavyweight title twice. He has been in the world of boxing longer than Joshua, starting his career in 2009 at the age of 28, and would no doubt prove to be a tough opponent.
Anthony Joshua has been preparing for his next fight, announcing that Kubrat is a serious competitor and challenger, and he would have to get past the heavyweight to get to his pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
Joshua revealed that his main goal is to defeat Fury, stating that without getting through Pulev, there can be no talks of facing Fury.
After Fury's big win against Wilder in Las Vegas in their second fight, Fury became the WBC world heavyweight champion. Wilder had retained and defended the title against several opponents for multiple years before his defeat.
If Joshua wins against Pulev and Fury wins against Wilder, the duo might get to clash soon.
Where will the fight take place?
Ever since announcing his next fight, fans have been itching to know when that fight would take place, but unfortunately, due to the ongoing pandemic, the sporting world has been greatly affected and plans have had to be changed on a number of occasions.
The venue was originally scheduled to hold at the 02 arena in London, where he made his professional debut. It has now been moved to the SSE Arena in Wembley. Unfortunately, due to the UK's COVID-19 guidelines, the number of fans allowed in the arena would not exceed 1000.
With the fight just around the corner, fans are extremely excited and agitated about the match. Joshua reveals that he is still very hungry and wants to "steamroll" through his opponent. He's been very dedicated and takes his training very seriously.
