Nollywood actor and former Labour Party (LP) campaign spokesperson, Kenneth Okonkwo, has officially parted ways with the party.

Okonkwo, who played a key role in the 2023 general elections, described the party as a “sinking ship” during an interview.

Why Kenneth Okonkwo Left the Labour Party

During the interview, Okonkwo did not hold back in his criticism, alleging that certain individuals within the party were using it for personal enrichment rather than fostering good governance. He pointed to the ongoing leadership crisis as a major reason for his exit, stating that LP no longer aligned with his vision for a better Nigeria.

In his resignation letter, Okonkwo declared:

“My entrance to politics is for good governance, and I will continue to work for it to ensure that Nigeria becomes a great country of incorruptible men. This aim can no longer be realised within the Labour Party as presently constituted.”

With his resignation taking effect on February 25, exactly two years after the 2023 presidential elections, Okonkwo also made it clear that he no longer has faith in Peter Obi, the former LP presidential candidate. He described the party as a political union for self-serving politicians, further distancing himself from its ideology.

Labour Party Reacts To Kenneth Okonkwo's Resignation As ‘Good Riddance’

Responding to Okonkwo’s departure, the National Publicity Secretary of LP, Abayomi Arabambi, dismissed the resignation as “good riddance to bad rubbish.” Speaking on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Arabambi insisted that the party remains strong and focused on unseating the ruling administration in 2027.

“There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors,” he said.

Arabambi further accused Okonkwo of colluding with the ruling party, claiming that his loyalty to LP was questionable from the start. He added that the actor-turned-politician should move on and refrain from speaking about the party in the future.
